Progressive Materials Associate Pro-Am a great day out at CGC

27th September 2021

With: Phil Ryan

A great day was had by all on Friday 24 September at Cottesloe Golf Club with a very enjoyable and successful Progressive Materials Associate Pro-Am conducted by Cottesloe Golf Shop PGA Associate program member Lucas Paddick.

Lucas Paddick has been employed and hard at work at Cottesloe Golf Club since 2019 completing his PGA Associate  Program ((formerly called trainee) under Golf Operations Manager Bruce Hay and is on the way to graduating as a PGA professional by end of 2021.

Lucas has successfully completed the Academic and Golf requirements of the program and a further requirement  is being able to set up from scratch and run a Pro-Am Event. The very successful 2021 Progressive Materials Associate Pro-Am at Cottesloe on Friday 24 September was a further box ticked off for Lucas and showed again his value in the industry in the years ahead.

A very hard-working and mature young man, Lucas is held in high esteem by Cottesloe Golf Club members and the enthusiastic support for the day by sponsors and individual participants reflected that.
Cottesloe member Adam Duff signed up as naming rights sponsor with his Progressive Materials company and 14 groups of three Cottesloe members quickly signed up to play together with  a group from our Greens Staff which rounded out the field of 15 groups.

Each group of three Cottesloe members was accompanied by Associate Program Professionals like Lucas, with our Cottesloe teaching professional Matthew Heath rounding out the field. The soon to be graduated Associate professionals also completed stroke rounds  for a small prize pool with winner Josh Herero shooting a nice 3-under 69 and taking home a handy $650.

The team competition was Irish Stableford, the best stableford score on par 3’s, best two on par 4’s and best three on par 5’s. The runaway winners with 96 points are pictured following, all going home proud owners of a beautiful Scotty Cameron putter for their efforts.

Lucas Paddick had welcomed all participants on the day as the field enjoyed a BBQ lunch snack before the tee off.  Refuelling on course as needed was  at the 5th hole and all enjoyed a great presentation dinner on the balcony afterwards. Dinner also gave some chance the for swing reviews by the field with their professional partners, with a slideshow of on-course action on the big screen.
Lucas  had a busy and joyous day all round and was a proud and happy young man reflecting on the day afterwards and told the Editor:

‘I would like to record my grateful thanks for all who assisted and participated in our great day out on Friday. Particular thanks to Adam Duff for stepping up as naming rights sponsor with his company Progressive Materials and it was fun and an honour to join their group on course.
My thanks also to other  supporting sponsors Mick and Anne Stroud, Titleist, Footjoy, Ping and Redbox Agencies.

Thanks also to Mark Solomons who sponsored a cocktail bar on course on the 5th tee. We ran a ‘Pot of Gold’ for NTP on the 5th ( $5  entry)  and a great delight to see our Greens Superintendent Des Russell step up there and take it out. Not sure if it was pre or post cocktail infusion, but he landed the pot! Grateful thanks also to our Women’s President Anne Hawthorne who was along selling tickets in the Pot of Gold and also a popular raffle for Preston Vale wine, all helping make the day work.

My grateful thanks to all the  Cottesloe members who entered and formed groups where they were paired with 14 local professionals and my thanks to my fellow Associate professionals who supported the day. Great to see our teaching Pro Matthew Heath out enjoying the day as well. The wonderful course we enjoyed was as always testament to the ongoing hard work from Des Russell, Richie May and their team. The Greens boys made a meal of it with Des taking out the pot of gold and the power hitting Cam MacDonald making light of his 18-handicap and outdriving a Grant Lewis bomb to win the long drive on 14!

My appreciation also to Aimee Christie of PGA WA out in support all day and taking the presentation photos. A big thank you also to our member Phil Ryan fo his great work with the on course gallery on the day, some pictured below and all players had the mixed joy of seeing some swings up on the big screen at the dinner! “
