With: Phil Ryan After a fabulous engrossing two days of exciting golf at Cottesloe, Victorian Professional Matias Sanchez has won the 2025 Sanwell Cottesloe Open by two shots with 12-under 132 (63, 69), winning by two shots from Louis Dobbelaar 134 (67, 67) and Cottesloe’s own Curtis Luck 134 (67, 67).<\/p>\n The Sanwell Cottesloe Open has run since 1948 and is the second \u00a0longest running Open tournament in WA after the WA Open and forms part of the Adidas PGA Pro-Am Series with a purse of $30,000 on offer. The event also incorporates the $10,000 Cottesloe Senior Invitational for the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy and that event was a thrilling finish indeed with Tim Elliott 141 (68, 73) a one shot winner from three tied on 142 in Jason Norris, Scott Barr and Terry Pikadaris.

The 38 Amateurs in the field also contesting the Kelly Rogers Medal for low amateur and our 2025 State Team members were to the fore with Connor Fewkes a 1-shot winner with 140 (68, 72) from Spencer Harrison 141 (70, 71) and equal third Josiah Edwards 142 (70, 72) and Adam Baillie 142 (70, 72).
The Cottesloe course was in immaculate condition and praised by players and officials at the presentations. The course was matched by perfect weather both days and reflected in the great scoring:
Hot scoring included a new course record 63 on Saturday by winner Matias Sanchez; a hole-in-one on the fifth Sunday by Kim Felton; no less than 39 eagles scored by the field and \u00a020 players broke 70 on Saturday and 15 on Sunday.

On course and elsewhere the fans were working their phones for live scoring and hopes rose and fell. Naturally a big crowd was out supporting Curtis Luck at his home club since 2006, however Curtis, as he did Saturday, was struggling to hole putts from relatively close range and after a three putt at seven was actually 1-over. Louis Dobbelaar had opened with four straight birdies and briefly reached the lead through six holes. Matias Sanchez then birdied 7, 8, 10 and 12 and seemingly had things really under control to lead by four. However he pulled his second left and lost on 14, then hit the par five with his provisional second try however a 3-putt double bogey was followed by a failed up and down on 15 for another bogey. |
