Round 1 Saturday report follows and the full rich 77 year history of the second longest running Open event on the West Australian golf calendar can be seen in the tournament preview and event history at bottom of this post.
The Sanwell Cottesloe Open sees the Professionals chasing a purse of $30,000 and 13 invited Senior Professionals compete for a separate purse of $10,000 in the Sanwell Senior Invitational for the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy. Our 38 amateurs in the field also in pursuit of the Kelly Rogers Medal for leading amateur, that trophy named for legendary Cottesloe member Kelly Rogers who won 7 Cottesloe Opens, including the first four from 1948.
Round 1 Report: Matias Sanchez leads by 3 after a course record 9-under 63
The annual Cottesloe Open is often the source for new updated course records. Our preview wondered if a new course record would be set and indeed it was, with Victorian Professional Matias Sanchez landing a 9-under 63. That lowered the current course record of 64 by 1, that record set by Nathan Barbieri on the Sunday round last year when winning.
Matias Sanchez leads by three from Cameron John, Aiden Didone and West Australian’s Jose De Souza on 66. Curtis Luck and Louis Dobbelaar also looming on 67. Kathryn Norris with a 1-under 71 did best of our three WPGA professionals competing.
It was a hot scoring Saturday. A new course record of 9-under 63, 16 eagles landed, 20 of the field breaking 70 and 45 players even par 72 or better. The field enjoyed a Cottesloe Golf Course in great condition and favourable weather with minimal wind in round 1 Saturday.

Top 10 Saturday hole by hole
Course Record: 9-under 63 to Matias Sanchez
Melbourne based professional Matias Sanchez was out at 8.10am and fired an opening drive onto the par four first, missed the eagle but reported later he felt off and running with the opening birdie. An eagle on 4 and birdies on the 5th and 9th saw him out in 31. He avoided a double bogey on 10 with an up and down from 70 metres after a tree rebound to his feet on his second shot. 11 saw another bogey with a missed putt from 6 feet after a chip from back fringe. Matias then got rolling again with a birdie on 12 and a drive 3 wood eagle from 6 feet on 14 which was then followed by birdies 15, 16, and 17 to stand on 18th tee 9-under. While that was just a closing par on 18, it was a stunner. Matias was in trees left, chipped out to about 100 metres, went over the pin to back of green and calmly rolled in downhill from outside 30 feet for a closing par and a new course record.
A delighted Matias was happily pictured afterwards with his course record card and was fulsome in praise for the course condition with the immaculate 777 greens getting a special mention, in what was his first ever round at the Cottesloe course! Congratulations to Matias and spectators will be able to see him first hand in the final group Sunday out 12.40pm 1st tee.
- Matias holes a challenging downhill final putt for his record 63
- A nice card to have on your first round ever at Cottesloe!
- Playing partners Tim Hart and Edmund Hall flank Matias after the 18th
- Matias’ great score for history framing
Local members were understandably out early in support of Cottesloe’s great champion and member since 2006 in Curtis Luck, contesting just his second Cottesloe Open as a Professional. Curtis had been a shot away second in 2024.
Curtis was in the marquee 7.30am group of New Zealand Open winner Ryan Peake and DP World Tour star Jason Scrivener. At day’s end the honours in the group were with Luck with 5-under 67, Scrivener a 69 and Peake an even par 72. Luck was hitting the ball in impressive fashion and boosted by eagles on 8th, an 8-iron to 8 feet and on 16 from just two feet. His marquee shot of the day came when his driver on the drivable 16th landed on and looked a hole in one chance as it worked across the slope, settling 2 feet away for a tap in eagle. Members will be out in force in round 2, with Curtis in second last group at 12.30pm.
- 7.30am start Saturday for Jason Scrivener, Ryan Peake and Curtis Luck

Cottesloe players: 8 members in action
A total of eight Cottesloe members, including Curtis Luck a member since 2006, were in action. Overall our players apart from Curtis and amateur Jack Stanton not quite finding their home ground advantage. Cottesloe players and round 2 times can be seen here:
- Cottesloe members Rd 1 scores and Rd 2 times
Jack Stanton lit up the front nine when out in 31, before bogeys on 10 and 11 with long range three putts. The 12th saw a tough bounce into trees and then a rebound back past him on a recovery ultimately saw a well saved bogey. Thirteen Jack was unlucky buried in a grassy face of the left bunker and a lip out putt saw a double bogey to be back to square. A birdie on 14 was offset by a bogey on 17 and a closing par for 72.
- Jack Stanton second to 8th after a big drive

- 1949 Kelly Rogers receives the Cottesloe Open Trophy, the second of seven wins
- Kelly Rogers Medal winners 2003-2024
The Cottesloe Open is a well-supported event by amateurs. A state ranking event for our male amateurs and the leading amateur is awarded the Kelly Rogers Medal that honours Cottesloe amateur great, Kelly Rogers, who is pictured above receiving the 1949 Cottesloe Open, one of his seven wins. Kelly was a Cottesloe Member 1938 until his passing in 2002.Since 2003 the leading amateur in the Cottesloe Open has been awarded the Kelly Rogers Medal.
Over the past 75 years, 30 winners of the Open have been amateurs, however none since Michael Foster in 2007. This year again sees a strong field of leading state amateurs in the field with the event being a ranking event The field includes our 2025 Men’s State Team members just completed the Interstate Series at Melville Glades this week.
State team member Josiah Edwards was the 2024 Kelly Rogers Medallist with a great 135 and the amateur stars have the talent to add their name to the Cottesloe Open Trophy as well.
Australian WPGA Stars on show as well:
It was great to have female WPGA Professionals Jess Whitting and Kathryn Norris play in 2024, adding richness to the great diverse tournament.Female players play from the full red tee course and participate in the Cottesloe Open event and prize money. Jess set a new official course record for women of 68 in round 2 Sunday last year after Kathryn had set a new mark of 69 one the Saturday.
Delighted that Jess and Kathryn will be joined by WPGA professional Tatiana Wijaya who was number one qualifier at the December 2024 WPGA Qualifying school. Tatiana plays out of Royal Fremantle when Perth based but Cottesloe Golf Club proud she was a Cottesloe member 2010-2014 when completing school prior to College at Pepperdine in California. While at Cottesloe Tatiana was our Junior Girls Champion in 2011 and in 2013 Runner-up to Minjee Lee in the 2013 State Amateur Championship. The 2013 WA Amateur a memorable one for Tatiana, beating no less than Hannah Green 3&1 in the semi-final before she met a rampant Minjee Lee in the final on Minjee’s home course RFGC and Minjee put on a sub-par clinic winning 12&11.
