After a fabulous engrossing two days of exciting golf at Cottesloe, Victorian Professional Matias Sanchez has won the 2025 Sanwell Cottesloe Open by two shots with 12-under 132 (63, 69), winning by two shots from Louis Dobbelaar 134 (67, 67) and Cottesloe’s own Curtis Luck 134 (67, 67).

The Sanwell Cottesloe Open has run since 1948 and is the second  longest running Open tournament in WA after the WA Open and forms part of the Adidas PGA Pro-Am Series with a purse of $30,000 on offer.
The full history of the Cottesloe Open and round 1 reports can be seen in the previous tournament web post HERE.

The event also incorporates the $10,000 Cottesloe Senior Invitational for the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy and that event was a thrilling finish indeed with Tim Elliott 141 (68, 73) a one shot winner from three tied on 142 in Jason Norris, Scott Barr and Terry Pikadaris.

The 38 Amateurs in the field also contesting the Kelly Rogers Medal for low amateur and our 2025 State Team members were to the fore with Connor Fewkes a 1-shot winner with 140 (68, 72) from Spencer Harrison 141 (70, 71) and equal third Josiah Edwards 142 (70, 72) and Adam Baillie 142 (70, 72).

The Cottesloe course was in immaculate condition and praised by players and officials at the presentations. The course was matched by perfect weather both days and reflected in the great scoring:
Hot scoring included a new course record 63 on Saturday by winner Matias Sanchez; a hole-in-one on the fifth Sunday by Kim Felton; no less than 39 eagles scored by the field and  20 players broke 70 on Saturday and 15 on Sunday.

Sanwell Cottesloe Open to Matias Sanchez in a thrilling finish

Matias Sanchez teed off with a 3-shot lead after his stunning 9-under 63 on Saturday that set a new course record. On course and elsewhere the fans were working their phones for live scoring and hopes rose and fell. Naturally a big crowd was out supporting Curtis Luck at his home club since 2006, however Curtis, as he did Saturday, was struggling to hole putts from relatively close range and after a three putt at seven was actually 1-over. Louis Dobbelaar had opened with four straight birdies and briefly reached the lead through six holes. Matias Sanchez then birdied 7, 8, 10 and 12 and seemingly had things really under control to lead by four. However he pulled his second left and lost on 14, then hit the par five with his provisional second try however a 3-putt double bogey was followed by a failed up and down on 15 for another bogey.
In the group ahead Curtis Luck had got the putter rolling with birdies on 9, 10 and 14 then followed by a great eagle 2 on 16 from about 10 feet and then a birdie on 17. In the group behind, Matias, needing to rally  hit a stunning faded tee shot on the drivable 16th, landing on and needed just a 3-foot tap in for eagle. The 17th then saw a chip out from behind a tree and then a stunning 15 footer for a saving par 5 which left him still a 2 shot leader up 18 and a rock solid tap in par there saw him a  two shot winner from Curtis Luck and Louis Dobbelaar.
A fabulous entertaining day for fans out watching and exciting golf once again at a Cottesloe Open.

Our winner Matias Sanchez is a Melbourne based Professional for four years, playing out of Sandhurst and Royal Melbourne Clubs and had a great first visit to Cottesloe and looking forward to defending his title and joining his fellow past champions in their winners Blue Jackets at the Friday evening Corporate Classic Dinner. Matias thanked the Cottesloe members and staff, and was fulsome in praise of the course and greens and grateful for the support of the sponsors, PGA and the Cottesloe Club and members.
The presentations were conducted by Cottesloe Captain Graeme Finlayson and President Rob Johnson along with PGA WA Membership Manager Brendon Allanby who saw a great tournament run from start to finish. President Rob Johnson spoke and passed on the Club’s grateful thanks again to Cottesloe member Fred McMurray of Sanwell Plumbing and Civil for his ongoing support as major sponsor. A special presentation had been made to Fred McMurray by the club at the Friday Corporate Classic that is a fabulous day out and also supports the event and prize money available.

Cottesloe Senior Invitational for the Lyndsay Stephen Memorial Trophy
Thirteen invited senior professionals contested the Cottesloe Senior Invitational within the event for a purse of $10,000. Plenty of interest in the pairings and players also enjoy a great annual dinner Saturday Night hosted by Cottesloe member Mack Hall a long time supporter of the Cottesloe Open and who started the Senior Invitation in 2014.
Happily for the 2014 winner Tim Elliott he has been back again regularly since and landed his second win in the event, his winning score of 1-under 141 actually 1 better than his 2014 win, so he agreed his game is ageing well! Indeed Tim was also the 1987 winner of the Cottesloe Open fully 38 years ago.
Our senior invitational players all paired together and played from the 10th tee in the afternoon and it was a thrilling finish in the run to the line before Tim Elliott prevailed by a shot from Jason Norris, Scott Barr and Terry Pilkadaris.
The event honours the memory of the late Lyndsay Stephen a great supporter of Cottesloe Open events and the late Lyndsay’s partner Chrissie Fast was along as usual to present the trophy.

Kelly Rogers Medal – Leading Amateur to Connor Fewkes
The four first placed in the battle for leading Amateur are all WA State Team members who completed their interstate series at Melville Glades on Wednesday. State Captain Connor Fewkes prevailed by a shot with 140 (68, 72) winning from Spencer Harrison 141 (70, 71) and Josiah Edwards 142 (70, 72) and Adam Baillie 142 (70, 72). Of the Cottesloe member players Jack Stanton did best with a solid even par 144 (72, 72).
